Tiger Dachshund - the spotted dachshund

Tigerdackel

Dachshunds that carry the Merle gene are called tiger dachshunds . This causes the dachshund's coat to have spots.

What types of tiger dachshunds are there?

Tiger dachshunds come in all coat variations:

Where does the tiger dachshund get its name from?

The name "tiger dachshund" comes from the dachshunds' striking coat pattern , which is reminiscent of the stripes of a tiger. Although the stripes on tiger dachshunds are not as pronounced as those on a tiger, the merle pattern creates a similar visual impact through its irregular spots.

The pattern itself is caused by a genetic mutation that leads to the characteristic light and dark spots in the coat. Due to this similarity in appearance and the fact that dachshunds are already known for their diverse coat colors and patterns, the term "tiger dachshund" was coined. It emphasizes the striking and special appearance of this dachshund variant.

What sizes do tiger dachshunds come in?

Tiger dachshunds can come in the following three sizes :

  1. Standard Tiger Dachshund (up to 12kg)
  2. Dwarf Tiger Dachshund (5 – 7kg)
  3. Rabbit -Tiger Dachshund (3 – 4kg)

The standard tiger dachshund is the largest and the rabbit tiger dachshund is the smallest of the three size variants.

How old do tiger dachshunds get?

Tiger dachshunds usually live for 12 to 16 years. This life expectancy is comparable to that of other dachshund breeds, as the genetic differences in coat pattern do not have a major impact on lifespan. However, the exact lifespan depends on various factors, such as:

  • Health: Regular veterinary visits and preventative care can improve the quality of life.
  • Nutrition: A balanced diet plays an important role.
  • Exercise: Dachshunds need sufficient exercise to avoid obesity and joint problems.
  • Genetics: Some dachshunds suffer from hereditary problems such as intervertebral disc disease (dachshund paralysis). Make sure they have an ergonomic and quiet place to sleep. An orthopedic dog bed is the perfect choice for this.

What colors do tiger dachshunds come in?

The tiger dachshund has the same characteristics as other dachshund variants. It is characterized by its short legs , long back , low height and dachshund look. The tiger dachshund comes in different colors:

  • Black tiger (black with lighter spots)
  • Red tiger (red with lighter spots)
  • Brown or chocolate tiger (brown with lighter spots)

No two tiger dachshunds are alike. Each spotted dachshund has its own characteristics and looks unique.

Tiger Dachshund – nature and character traits

The tiger dachshund, like other dachshunds, is characterized by a stubborn and lively character. Typical characteristics that describe the nature of the tiger dachshund are the following:

  1. Brave and confident : Despite their small size, Tiger Dachshunds have a brave and confident character. They tend to take on big challenges, which is due to their original breeding as hunting dogs.
  2. Intelligent and curious : Tiger Dachshunds are intelligent and curious. They love to explore their surroundings and discover new things. These traits make them eager to learn, but sometimes a little stubborn, as they tend to get their own way.
  3. Stubborn : A well-known characteristic of dachshunds is their stubbornness. They can be obstinate at times and therefore need consistent but loving training.
  4. Loyal and affectionate : Tiger Dachshunds are loyal companions who can form a close bond with their owners. They love being close to their family and are often affectionate.
  5. Playful and active : Because Tiger Dachshunds are playful and have high energy levels, they need regular exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and balanced.
  6. Alert : Dachshunds, including the Tiger Dachshund, are extremely alert and report unusual events in their environment.

What is the Merle gene?

The Merle gene causes the dark brown and black pigment eumelanin to be lightened, creating white or light spots in the fur. This makes the basic colors black, red and brown appear lighter. Areas of the fur that contain the pigment pheomelanin, however, remain unchanged . The pattern of the spots varies from dog to dog. If a dachshund with a Merle factor is mated with another dachshund that also carries the Merle gene, the offspring will show these spot patterns.

Tiger Dachshund – How do the blue eyes develop?

Some tiger dachshunds are characterized by one or two blue eyes. The color of the eyes is also caused by the Merle gene. It is also possible that only a small part of the eye is blue.

Does the Merle gene promote disease?

The merle gene can cause health problems in dachshunds and other dog breeds. It affects coat color and can result in a characteristic spotted or marbled pattern. Dogs that carry a single merle gene (heterozygous merles) usually do not have serious health problems . However, the risk of health problems increases significantly when a dog has two copies of the merle gene (homozygous merles). The following problems can arise:

  • Miscarriages or stillbirths
  • deafness
  • blindness
  • Mental illnesses
  • Lower life expectancy

The white tiger – a painful breeding

A white tiger is when a dachshund with a merle gene is mated with another dachshund with a merle gene . Their fur has many white, large patches. In Germany, this type of breeding is prohibited because the dogs can suffer health problems as a result of this mating. As already described, abnormalities can occur. In Germany, this type of breeding is considered cruel and is strictly prohibited. In America, however, breeding is still permitted.

What do American Tiger Dachshunds look like and what is the difference?

The American Tiger Dachshund, often called the "Dapple Dachshund," is distinguished from other dachshunds by a striking coat pattern caused by the Merle gene. This gene results in an uneven distribution of color pigments in the coat, resulting in a piebald or marbled pattern.

Characteristics of the American Tiger Dachshund:

Coat Pattern: The most distinctive feature of the American Tiger Dachshund is the speckled or marbled coat pattern . This can occur in both short-haired and long-haired Dachshunds. The base color can vary, with the pattern typically having lighter and darker patches.

Eye color: American Tiger Dachshunds can have unusual eye colors, such as blue or partially blue eyes, which is also due to the Merle gene.

Size and Build: Like other dachshunds, the American tiger dachshund comes in a variety of sizes, including standard and miniature. The build is typically long and low, with short legs and a sturdy body.

Health Risks: American Tiger Dachshunds, especially those carrying two merle genes, may be more prone to certain genetic health problems, as previously mentioned.

The tiger pattern is particularly popular in the United States, which is why the term "American Tiger Dachshund" is often used to describe this particular color type.

What is the difference between a tiger dachshund and a piebald dachshund?

A Piebald Dachshund is a Dachshund with a special coat pattern caused by the so-called Piebald gene (S gene). This gene results in white patches on the dog's body that are distributed in a specific way across the coat (not to be confused with the White Tiger Dachshund).

Coat Pattern: While the merle pattern creates a mottled or marbled appearance, the piebald pattern is characterized by large, clear white patches on the body. There are no marbled or mottled areas in piebald dachshunds.

Genetics: The piebald pattern is caused by the piebald gene, which is a different gene than the merle gene, which is responsible for the merle pattern.

In Germany, the Piebald Dachshund has not yet become very popular. They are said to have existed as early as the 16th century.

In summary, every tiger dachshund looks unique. The tiger dachshund is an active, confident and curious companion that needs plenty of exercise.
